Griffith Australia Post delivery centre manager Steven Graham (left) and Suicide Awareness president Val Rowe congratulate Australia Post Community Champion Award recipient Jeff Whitworth.
JEFF Whitworth is best known around town for his job delivering mail. But after being named the winner of the Australia Post Community Champion Award, he'll also be known for his delivery of a different kind of important service.
It is his dedicated involvement with suicide awareness in the local community that has gained him the honour.
Mr Whitworth is a member of Suicide Awareness, a group which provides the residents of Griffith with monetary support, monitoring and provisions in times of need-particularly for those who are deemed suicidal. He said he is glad to have received the prize of $1000 and that it will be put to great use - providing money, groceries and toys to families and individuals doing it tough in the hard drought conditions.
"The money was used in this year's Christmas Tree," he said. "The aim of the program is to collect gifts and money from local businesses and residents and distribute them on Christmas Day to many locals suffering from depression or self-harm. One small gift can go a long way to putting a smile on someone's face and making them feel special on Christmas Day."
Griffith delivery centre manager Steven Graham said with so many outstanding applications received from staff, contractors and licensees across the country, it was great to see a member of our local area recognised.
"Jeff's degree of involvement in the community is impressive and his commitment to assisting those in need is outstanding. He is such a great example of commitment, passion and spirit. Jeff is an inspiring and worthy winner," he said.
Launched in 2005, the award recognises Australia Post staff, contractors and licensees who actively devote their spare time to volunteer for a charity or community organisation.
